TORRE RUHLAND

A residential building in the shape of a tower built right on the edge of the lake. The building formed an integral part of the Ruhland estate embankment and was originally erected for Franz, Langensiepen’s younger son, and followed the architectural model of medieval German fortifications. The idea may have been related to the town’s name Gardone, which indicates a fortress or a defensive structure. It is unknown if the building was ever occupied, however, the earthquake of 1911 successfully deterred the young Langensiepen from moving in.
